In the papah

Here's an article from the Chicago Tribune
cuz we called them and told them to come out.
I'm surprised the news wasn't there.

Sneakerheads don't mind the chill if they can buy scarce Air Jordans
Shoe collectors camp out on Michigan Avenue outside Niketown for a chance at one of the last numbered pairs
By Steve Schmadeke | Tribune reporter
December 19, 2008
When Detroit residents Tim Muir and Chris Nielsen appeared outside the Niketown store on Michigan Avenue, carrying enough cold-weather gear to cross Siberia, word quickly spread among shoe fanatics.

Only a few hours later, Bridgeport resident Joe Gorman, 27, called a contact at the store, who acknowledged the line had formed. Gorman's girlfriend, Clara Cinta, dropped him off outside. While Cinta bought a $30 tent, did laundry and gathered supplies, Gorman called friends in Ohio and Michigan, who immediately set out for Chicago.

They were all after the same thing—the last pairs of numbered Air Jordans Nike apparently plans to sell. A total of 23 U.S. stores are each selling 23 pairs on Dec. 23 at $230 a pop. (Air Jordans have been on the market for 23 years).

"It's the end of an era," Muir said wistfully.

Sneaker fans said they think the shoes can be resold for around $2,000.

Gorman also called Detroit resident Simon Carter, 24, who after spending a cold night in line said Thursday he contracted pneumonia last time he waited outside in freezing weather for a pair of shoes, but that didn't stop him.

"It was a month before I felt like myself again," said Carter, who owns about 500 pairs of sneakers. "But we're dedicated—I'm a die-hard sneaker fan."

Carter had nothing on Artino Sowunmi, 21, who flew in from California with two friends. They brought a six-person tent, chairs and a paperback copy of "Atlas Shrugged."

"Some people collect cars, some people collect cups, I collect shoes," Sowunmi explained Thursday as frozen winds raced down Michigan Avenue. He traveled to Chicago because he said four of the five California stores selling shoes were "shady"—workers only sold to friends or raffled the shoes off.

The bitter cold was affecting even Chicago natives.

"You just can't get the chatter out of the bones all day—for like a week afterwards," said Gorman, explaining what it was like to sleep in a tent on cold concrete.

Gorman said he called in "shoe" to work ("Yeah, there's another rare shoe, and I'll be outside for a couple days.") and insisted that the roughly $1,200 he spends a month on shoes (not including glass display cases) is worth it.

"I spend a lot, but in return I get good friends and I'm also getting one hell of an experience," he said. "Hopefully, five years from now I can sell [the shoes] and put a down payment on a house."

Despite the cold and lack of sleep, the atmosphere was friendly. Sneakerheads passed around two portable heaters supplied by Rosemont resident Shane Money, 28, and gamely answered questions for puzzled passersby: What are you doing? Are you homeless? Are you crazy?

Store employees eventually had mercy and handed out orange wristbands to reserve their places shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday. The out-of-towners packed up and said they planned to do some sight-seeing. Gorman and his girlfriend could now make her sister's 17th birthday celebration.

More than 23 wristbands were handed out. Near the end of the line, Little Village resident Darnell Mangum, 33, held out hope he'd get a pair of shoes to resell at a profit. He has three children to buy Christmas presents for and rent to pay on what he's making selling concessions in sections 436 and 437 at Soldier Field, he said. He saw his cold wait outside as part of a classic American endeavor.

"America is the home of the hustler," he said.

Jordan 23 Premier

I end up having to spent another blessed night
on Michigan Avenue at Niketown
but these are for profit not for me.

Last year the Jordan Titaniums went for over $1000
& these are expected to do as well

So I figured I might as well wait
in the cold night instead of staying home
and watching tv!

Thank God for the sleet storm cuz Nike gave out
wristbands for the elite 23.
I'm #9
But I gotta go there everyday at 9:30
until tuesday

Geez, all them annoying people who ask us what we are
waiting out here for? We usually lie to them and
make up crazy shit like
Hannah Montana Nike
Ditka 09
But when we tell them shoes or Jordans
they don't care!

Sorry no picture right now.
I'm not too sure what color they look like.
But this is us

The Californians couldn't believe it but
we're Chicagoans so we accept it

Shicahgoans call it "Mi$hgan Ave"

Oh,Michigan Avenue!
How I frickin adore you & can't stand ya at the same time.
The richies call it Michigan Avennuuu
But I call it Mi$gan Ave <~~~ just "ave"

If you wanna cruise down Mi$hgan Ave you can watch Twista's Overnight Celebrity Video I've popped many tags on Mishgan Ave
& Snoop Dogg & R Kelly video Pass that Shit! I definitely have.

Well outta towners...
remember to walk faster before u get robbed by the bums!
No I take that back, the bums are cool.
The crackheads and the gold diggers is what you have to worry about!
Bee & Apes always used to say that if we can meet a rich old lady or old man on Mi$hgan Ave then we can milk them and secretly be together!!!

I've spent a couple nights on Michigan Ave's cold sidewalk, too.
For campouts at the "just alrite" Niketown.
Mishgan Ave is cool at 4 o clock in the morning
when u can skateboard down the whole strip
& The crazy people do come out at night!
But I feel bad cuz they are insane in the membrane..
no pun intended! seriously it's sad

So what are my favorite stores to jack, I mean, shop:
Oh the infamous North Face, the Polo Mansion, Watertower (a whole mall within itself), then H&M & Victoria's Secret is across the street,
Closeby "The Drake" (name drop) is Chanel & Gucci & Louie Vuitton
wait there's like 2 other big malls, you got the 900 shops & some Galeria (ohwee)
with the LEGO store & Sephora, u got Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Cartier, who are telling me the time, GAP, there used to be a dope Timberland store.
oh yeah they just put up a Forever 21 but I think that one is wack.
There is also a survey spot where I get free money! Seriously!
Also, Coach & La Perla & Garetts Ghetto Popcron, if you love cheese popcorn we got the best!I forget about the Apple Store where I go on the internet for hours!
Oh yeah, people on Mishgan Ave are on their grind.
Ever heard of silver boy, and bucket boys? Only in Chicago...
That's actually right in front of Niketown. This Silver dude is a hater! He turned his hip hop off cuz a bum was jammin'

The difference between State Street & Mi$hgan Ave is that Mi$hgan Ave
is more high class and State Street is bougee & more hippie.
And more ghetto people who think they faboulous going to school
downtown stenching it with smoking the smelliest cigarettes ever.

I do absolutely loooove the flowers & shrubs Mayor Daley likes to spend all our tax money for. I steal them and plant them in my garden. Whatta Mexican! Just kidding.

Also on Michgan Ave is Millenium Park!
Where that stupid silver bean is.
$36 Million Dollars on a stupid silver bean is pretty smart...right Daley?
Mayor Daley is our mayor and he's a mobster!
But I do like this about Millenium Park
Michigan Ave. Pictures, Images and Photos
A Glass TV fountain with people's faces. I want my face on there.
& They move & wink!

That's Chicago for ya people! Come visit me! I own the airport!
